Tools to Help You Get Your "Ducks in a Row" - Iowa Small Business

Posted by IASourceLink Admin on Sep 06, 2017

RegulatoryComplying with regulations is often considered one of the necessary evils of small business ownership, and recognizing which regulations apply to your business can be a hurdle to jump.  Even the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) agrees that some regulations should be modified or repealed and is now seeking input from business owners on what is obsolete, unnecessary or burdensome (read on for more information on how you can share thoughts).  Until that voice is heard, turn to IASourceLink for help!

Did you know that the State of Iowa has more than 430 different license and permit requirements?  Do you know what tax incentives might be available for your business?  Thinking about doing business with the government?  The Regulatory Section on IASourceLink can help you navigate through the sometimes-muddy waters of these and other regulatory areas.  Here’s just a few:

  • IASourceLink is home to the Iowa Business License Information Center, where information on licenses can quickly and easily be found.  A license search will provide details on the license itself, as well as provide the correct agency contact information.  Just need some basic information on regulatory requirements for a business in Iowa?  You can find that here as well.

  • Determining a legal structure is one of the most important decisions to make when starting or growing a business.  Tax implications and legal liability are just two reasons to thoroughly understand which structure is right for your business stage.  Learn more about the different types of business entities and some associated advantages and disadvantages to be aware of.

  • Considering selling products or services to the government?  Local, state and federal government agencies buy an amazing array of products and services!  If you’re not sure where to start, guidance offered through Iowa State University’s Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP) is free or low cost and can be a great first step!

  • Do you have an invention that you need to protect?  There are many reasons your intellectual property (IP) should be protected and the United States government has resources available to help you learn how to patent, trademark or copyright your invention.

And finally, if you’d like to provide some insight to the federal government on current small business regulations you’d like to see removed or changed, you now have an opportunity.  The SBA will be seeking comments from business owners regarding reducing unnecessary regulatory burden through October 16, 2017.  Here’s your chance to be heard!
