Goal Setting with Vision Boards in 2021

2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. Many New Year’s resolutions were forgotten or changed as the pandemic altered so many of our lives. For some businesses, 2020 turned into a year that just meant staying afloat. A year when wearing masks became a fashion statement, when we all discovered the many different smells of hand sanitizer, and Zoom reached over 300 million daily users. If 2020 taught us anything it was to never take for granted the small things like family gatherings, trips to your favorite local coffee shop, or working out at the gym.

As we dive into 2021, let’s make goal setting a top priority. Let’s revisit those goals that got set aside for 2020 and move them to the top of the list. Whether those goals are personal, professional, or specific to your company. Physically writing them down or compiling a vision board will help these goals become a reality. Vision boards can be used for many scenarios and help anyone better understand where they see their future/company going.

Wait, what is a vision board? – A collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes or goals, intended to serve as inspiration or motivation.

Why use a vision board?

  • Serve as an invaluable tool to motivate and inspire you or your teams towards concrete daily action in pursuit of your biggest and most important life/company goals.

  • Your vision will help you define your short and long-term goals, and guide the decisions you make along the way.

  • A vision board helps you clarify what you want out of your life because it forces you to put something down.

Creating A Vision Board 101:

Step 1: Grab a piece of paper and jot down some thoughts. Ask yourself questions that may help trigger your thinking.

  • What is most important to you?

  • What sales goals do you have and what does this look like?

  • How many clients do you wish to serve in 2021?

  • What do you want your company to be ‘known’ for?

  • Where do you see yourself/the company in 5 years?

Step 2: Close your eyes, actually close your eyes, it works! Imagine what these goals look like.

  • Do images come to your mind?

  • A specific set of words?

  • A familiar quote?

  • A symbol?

  • Someone you look up to?

Step 3: Get started! There is no wrong way to create a vision board. (This is YOUR vision, as long as it makes sense to YOU) Your vision board could be a collage of images, symbols, or words that represent your 2021 goals. It could just be a list of words, it could be compiled clippings from newspapers or magazines, or use a powerpoint presentation to share it with your team in your next zoom call. Once you have perfected your vision board, hang it up in a place where you will see it everyday or set it as your screensaver.
