From the Desk of Director Durham – 10/2/14

This month, Director Durham covers innovation in Iowa, mentioning the top programs and events to participate in. Some events in particular that support innovation and entrepreneurship are Iowa’s Advanced Manufacturing Conference, the I/OWA Conference, and the Innovation EXPO.

Iowa’s Advanced Manufacturing Conference, on October 9th, will explore what manufacturers must do to continue to compete at a time of exciting innovation, expanded global commerce and ever-changing government regulations. Dr. Frank Luntz will be the keynote, one of the most honored communications experts today.

The I/OWA Conference will take place on October 16th and 17th, bringing together innovators from all kinds of backgrounds to share ideas and support one another. Attendees will discuss innovation on a national scale, as well as look at what resources are available locally to help support Iowa’s startup community.

The Innovation EXPO, happening October 21st, connects Iowa business leaders with other entrepreneurs and resources to help our region create new jobs, stay globally competitive, and most of all, celebrate our Iowa entrepreneurs. The Innovation EXPO is a coordination of three statewide events; Technology Association of Iowa’s “”Pitch & Grow””, “”Iowa Seed and Venture Forum,”” EDC’s “”Entrepreneur Showcase,”” featuring “”Inventor’s Garage,”” “”Venture@UI,”” and “”Startup Fair.””

The University of Iowa will be conducting Venture School six week training programs all across Iowa. This unique program allows teams of entrepreneurs to work firsthand commercializing innovations and creating new ventures. The next Venture School will be held in partnership with the University of Northern Iowa and North Iowa Area Community College.

Innovation and growth happens at all stages of our lives. The Iowa Economic Development Authority offers an internship program that connects businesses with promising young talent via our Iowa Student Internship Program. It is a unique partnership of academia, industry, and government all working together to link young Iowans to the state’s diverse career opportunities. The program gives interns a chance to gain valuable work experience and helps Iowa companies recruit their future talent.
