Social Media Club of KC: Advice from an Expert

Before you immerse yourself in the world of all things social, why not take a quick beat and take the advice of an expert?

Social Media Club of Kansas City, one of KCSourceLink’s 200+ Resource Partners, hosted Chad Mitchell, senior director of Digital Communications for Walmart at its September monthly breakfast. (An aside: if it’s not already on your calendar, it should be.) Chad serves as a strategic thinker and digital storyteller, tasked with managing and supporting all aspects of Walmart’s corporate digital presence..

Mitchell’s words of advice were to know and understand your customers when deciding which form of social media will work best for you and your company and decide what you want the media to accomplish before randomly replying and/or following others.

Following in the Footsteps of Social Giants

Corporate Walmart decided to focus mainly on Twitter and use the microblogging mechanism to protect, manage and improve their reputation. The reasons Walmart uses Twitter can be transferred to many entrepreneurs and small businesses as well. Twitter allows users to connect and easily interact with new and existing clients. Business owners can watch what others are tweeting about their business to ensure customer satisfaction, repeat purchases and positive word-of-mouth.

Walmart also uses social to have a voice and build relationships, which is applicable to entrepreneurs and small business owners. Spread the word about your business without a huge amount of time or financial investment. Twitter has a global reach and allows business owners to tell their story – who you are and what you do.
