The UI business incubation program includes services and facilities that support new business ventures that use advanced technology. All companies take advantage of services offered to nurture these new companies during their early years. Also available are “accelerator” facilities that support companies that have moved past the start-up phase but still are early in their development as a business enterprise. Extensive experience with start-up ventures enables the BioVentures Center incubator staff and their colleagues in other IOWA Centers for Enterprise programs to deliver the wide range of services needed to grow new life science companies and other new technology-based businesses. Incubator tenant companies draw on the vast research and business resources of The University of Iowa, a dynamic regional business community and supportive local and state governments. BioVentures has two wings—the two-story wing is the biotech incubator for the University of Iowa, and the three-story portion is 43,000 square feet of speculative laboratory space. The University of Iowa’s wing features wet labs with adjoining flex space which will be an office or a lab. The labs are arranged in a string along a central hall and can link together as companies need more space. The University’s purpose is to foster biotech start-ups’ development until they have the capacity to function independently and can move to their own location.
