“The Inside Scoop” – Doing Business with IDOT, Including Materials Lab Tour

November 1, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm CDT

Are you a small construction business or a certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) company interested in pursuing Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) projects? Look no further! Join us for an in-person event organized by Iowa DOT auditors and trainers and presented by Wes Musgrove, Director of the Construction and Materials Bureau. This event is designed to provide the inside scoop directly from the source, helping you confidently pursue and successfully perform Iowa DOT projects.

During this event, you will gain valuable insights into what the Iowa DOT considers a successful contractor, covering various aspects of project execution. Our expert speakers will guide you through the bidding process, understanding information for providing accurate quotes, administration requirements, subcontracts/contracts, wage rates, certified payroll, and effective communication with stakeholders. You’ll also learn about the basic expectations on projects from the Contracts & Specifications Bureau within the Iowa DOT, enabling you to be well-prepared for future endeavors.

Why Attend?

· Learn from Iowa DOT Director of Construction and Materials Bureau, Wes Musgrove

· Understand the holistic approach to becoming a successful contractor for Iowa DOT projects.

· Gain insights into the bidding process and administrative requirements.

· Explore subcontracts, contracts, wage rates, and certified payroll best practices.

· Enhance your communication skills with stakeholders.

· Get the opportunity to ask direct questions and build relationships with Iowa DOT personnel.

But that’s not all! The event doesn’t end with just classroom learning. The second portion of the event offers an exclusive tour of the Iowa DOT’s Central Materials Testing Laboratory. This facility plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and durability of Iowa’s transportation system. Witness the testing and evaluation of constituent building-block materials such as soils, aggregates, cement, concrete, asphalt binders, and asphalt mixes. Additionally, learn how the laboratory tests lottery balls used in the national Powerball lottery, ensuring they meet precise specifications regarding weight and diameter.

During the laboratory tour, you will also get a glimpse of the equipment used by the Iowa DOT’s Special Investigations Group for field testing and pavement data collection. This includes pavement distress surveys, core drilling, friction evaluation, pavement profiling, falling weight deflectometer, and ground penetrating radar testing on primary and interstate roadways statewide. The data collected in the department’s pavement database is critical for designers and Districts to document and evaluate pavement conditions, determine project needs, and establish priorities.

This event offers immense value to anyone wishing to do business or currently involved in Iowa Contracts projects. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to gain insights directly from Iowa DOT experts, build relationships, and take an exclusive Central Materials Testing Laboratory tour. Join us for an informative and exciting day that can elevate your construction business to new heights!
