Contractors Applying For License
All contractors in the state of Iowa need to be registered with the Iowa Division of Labor — and that’s where IASourceLink comes in! We have information on every business license offered within Iowa, and walk you through who to contact, how to obtain that license, and when you’ll need to renew it.
You need to complete the Iowa general contractor registration if you offer construction services in Iowa, and earn more than $2,000 per year doing it. Those construction services include plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems services. If you make less than $2,000 per year on construction services or if you work only on your own real estate, you don’t need to register.
Certain contractors may be exempt from paying the registration fee if they meet the outlined requirements. To qualify, you must be a self-employed contractor whom doesn’t work with or for other contractors in the same phases of construction, and doesn’t pay over $2,000 per year to employees. Fee exemption only applies to the registration fee, not the license fee.
Find the specific Iowa contractor license you need by visiting our Business License Information Center and entering “contractor” into the Keyword bar, and hitting the “SEARCH” button. There you’ll find the various contractor licenses and find the one that best fits your business.
