Iowa Sales and Use Tax for Landscaping and Lawncare

Terry started with the Iowa Department of Revenue in 1987 as a summer intern working to find non-registered businesses. In the fall of 1987, he became a revenue agent, collecting past due taxes in the Davenport area. In 1990, he became a field taxpayer service specialist (FTSS). As an FTSS, he mainly works with local businesses and the community colleges on sales, use, and local option taxes; withholding and income taxes, and elderly credit (rent reimbursement).


This online course will provide an overview of Iowa sales tax issues related to the services of lawn care and landscaping.

  • What is/isn’t a “lawn?”
  • Who may be exempt?
  • What is considered landscaping?
  • Are materials taxable?
  • Can landscapers be contractors?
