The Truth About Free Government Grants
I need a business grant. What is available?
Unlike business loans, government grants are typically for nonprofit organizations, not small businesses. Such grant funding is restricted to very specific audiences, and the use of such funding is subject to many conditions with reporting responsibilities. Find out the facts.
BE VERY CAREFUL of advertisements promoting “free money for your business.” These ads are misleading, often suggesting that you can receive a list of grant sources for a fee of a few hundred dollars. Frequently, this is a list of microloan programs - which you must repay - or grants for nonprofit agencies. More to the point, all of the available funding resources in Iowa have already been compiled and are freely available to search through via the Resource Navigator. If you still have questions about available grant programs, call the Iowa Business Concierge at 866-537-6052.
The federal government does offer a few very competitive and targeted grants to companies developing various technologies. Find out more in the High Technology Funding section.
